City Center

In this page I am mentioning all the places that are within a walking distance from Jerusalem City Center which is the walking street (for the Old city, see the first page).

How to arrive to Jerusalem City Center ?

Same as for the Old City. From the Central Bus and Train station, take the Tram and get down at the stop “Jaffa Center” or “City Hall”.

Ben Yehuda walking street

What is it ?

The Town Center of Jerusalem, a pedestrian street with shopping.

There are more commercial streets around it. This is also the main area for Jerusalem’s nightlife. Read about Ben Yehuda walking street in Wikipedia. In the following picture Yaffo street, where the Tram passes :

Mamilla Mall

What is it ?

A long (610 m) open air commercial center, with modern shops, restaurants and cafés.

It was opened in 2008. One side of the long mall is located near Jaffa gate. (for the old city) so you will probably pass through this mall.

Mahane Yehuda Market

What is it ?

The main food market of Jerusalem.

It is also a trendy place with some bars and coffees.

How to get there ?

It is about half way between the walking street and the central bus station. You can walk to the market or take the Tram and get down at the stop “Mahane Yehuda”. Look at the following Map (Click to enlarge) or at the Google Interactive Map above.

Mea Shearim – The ultra orthodox Jewish quarter

What is it ?

The ultra orthodox Jewish quarter of Jerusalem.

Come to visit this neighborhood if you want to immerse yourself in another world. The houses are very modest.
From the endless signs, I understood that they want visitors to be dressed modestly and they also don’t want to be disturbed.

Mishkenot Sha’ananim neighborhood (Yemin Moshe)

What is it ?

The first neighborhood built out of the walls, in 1860.

The first dwellers had a tough time, it was dangerous and hazardous to live outside Jerusalem walls, but now it is a pleasant neighborhood with red roofs. (Read more in Wikipedia)

There is a famous windmill built by Sir Moshe Montefiore. The windmill had a lot of adventures and was partly destroyed in a war, but renovated lately to look exactly as at birth. The restoration was done by a company from Holland, of course. (Read in Wikipedia)

On your way to Mishkenot Shaananim, you may pass beside the famous King David Hotel. Foreign presidents and other important people are staying in this hotel when they come to Jerusalem. The Hotel has an interesting history (read in Wikipedia).

If you continue to walk after the windmill, you will arrive to the old train station that is now an open sky entertainment complex.

From the town center (Mamilla mall zone), you can walk in King David street.
